Catholic Priest Found Murdered Weeks After Hosting Deputy President Gachagua
The Catholic community and residents of Nyandarua County are mourning the tragic death of Rev. Fr. John Maina Ndegwa, the parish priest of Igwamiti Catholic Parish in Ol Joro Orok, whose body was discovered in Kikopey, Gilgil, Nakuru County.
Fr. Maina was reported missing on Friday, May 17, after failing to respond to calls from fellow clergy and parishioners. His lifeless body was found dumped by the roadside, showing signs of assault. His vehicle, a Subaru Forester, remains missing.
Two weeks prior, Fr. Maina had hosted Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during a parish family day celebration. The event was well attended and widely publicized, with Fr. Maina noted for his warmth and humility.
The Catholic Diocese of Nyahururu confirmed Fr. Maina's death in an official statement, describing him as a devoted servant of God whose loss is deeply felt by the faithful and the wider community.
Police have launched an investigation into the murder, but no suspects have been named so far. Authorities are also searching for the priest’s missing car as part of the ongoing probe.
The motive behind the killing remains unclear as detectives work to piece together the final moments of the priest's life.
Fr. Maina will be remembered for his humility, dedication to his parishioners, and the warm welcome he extended to all who visited his church. Funeral arrangements are currently underway.
