Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary and ex-Speaker of the National Assembly, Justin Muturi, has raised concerns after his official security detail was allegedly withdrawn on Monday evening, April 7, at around 7:30 PM.
Speaking to the press early Tuesday, Muturi stated that the officers assigned to him by virtue of his previous role as Speaker were recalled without prior notice or explanation. The move, he says, has left him exposed and puzzled about the rationale behind the decision.
“My security detail was withdrawn last night without any formal communication. I was only informed by the officers themselves that they had been instructed to report back to their command,” Muturi said.
While the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government has yet to issue a statement regarding the matter, Muturi has called for clarity, citing the standard protocol that allows former high-ranking state officers to retain a minimal security presence for their personal safety.
The withdrawal comes amid rising political tensions and growing scrutiny over the allocation and withdrawal of security to former state officials, sparking speculation over whether the move was administrative or politically motivated.
Muturi served as Speaker of the National Assembly from 2013 to 2022 before his appointment as Public Service CS. He was replaced in a recent cabinet reshuffle and has since maintained a relatively low public profile.
