The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging for culpable homicide. Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme found Nwachukwu guilty after the prosecution, which presented 17 witnesses and 25 documents, proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. Besides the death sentence, Nwachukwu received additional prison terms and fines on other charges, including spousal battery and child cruelty.
Gender rights activists welcomed the ruling, describing it as a major victory against domestic violence and femicide. Ololade Ajayi of DOHS Cares Foundation called the verdict "satisfactory" and urged faster judicial processes in similar cases. Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prof. Joy Ezeilo, praised the judgment as a landmark that offers hope to victims of gender-based violence and called for continued support for Osinachi’s children.
