President William Ruto’s planned meetings in the Mt Kenya region have been cancelled due to widespread dissatisfaction among residents.
The cancellations raise questions about the region’s current political mood and its support for the government. In addition to that, the key events in Sagana, Embu, Kiambu, and Ruringu were called off, reportedly due to outrage over excessive budgets, local discontent, and shifting political dynamics.
The Sagana meetings were scrapped after local leaders proposed an alleged extravagant budget for 15,000 attendees, each requiring Ksh 20,000.
The Embu Market stopover was also cancelled following the recent sacking of CS Justin Muturi, a move that reportedly angered locals, making the visit politically risky.
Another major event, the Ruringu Stadium launch, was called off. The venue had been inaugurated eight years ago by Ruto when he served as Deputy President, and many questioned the need for another launch.
The rejection of costly public meetings suggests that locals are prioritising tangible development over political grandstanding. It remains to be seen whether the government will adjust its approach to regain the region’s trust.
