Raila flew to Juba on Friday in response to the rising tensions following Machar' s arrest. However, despite his diplomatic efforts, he was denied permission to meet with Machar, who remains under house arrest.
" I asked to be allowed to talk to Dr. Machar, but they were not able to let me see him. They recommended that I meet with (Ugandan) President Yoweri Museveni and update him on the situation, " Raila stated.
During discussions with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir, Raila was informed that Machar' s arrest followed the killing of a general and ten others in Nasir town. Kiir explained that investigations were ongoing and that Machar was being held under house arrest due to suspicions surrounding his supporters' involvement.
