President William Ruto has nominated Erastus Edung Ethekon as the next chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), marking a major step toward reconstituting the electoral agency ahead of future elections.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by Chief of Staff Felix Koskei, the President also unveiled six nominees for commissioner roles. The nominees are Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sarobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Araphat Abdallah.
The nominations follow the conclusion of the recruitment process led by the IEBC Selection Panel, which presented its report to the President on Tuesday, May 6.
Ruto received the panel’s recommendations at State House, Nairobi, where he lauded their work, stating:
“In accordance with the provisions of the IEBC Act, I will nominate and transmit the names to the National Assembly in full fidelity to the constitutional principles that guide our system of governance.”
The nominees’ names have been forwarded to the National Assembly for vetting and possible approval. Once cleared, they will assume office at a critical time when the electoral commission is under pressure to reform and rebuild public trust.
