Uhuru Slams Aid Freeze

Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has spoken about the reactions of some leaders after U.S. President Donald Trump cut financial aid, including donations from USAID.

Speaking during the East Africa Region Global Health Security Summit 2025, Kenyatta expressed surprise at how certain leaders were upset by this decision, reminding them that the United States is neither their government nor their country. He questioned why they expected Trump to continue giving them money and urged them to see this as a wake-up call.

Kenyatta emphasized that every country must take responsibility for its own development rather than depending on foreign aid. He pointed out that while donations from other nations can be helpful, they should not be relied upon as the main source of progress. He reminded leaders that foreign aid is a privilege, not a right, and no country is obligated to support another.

He encouraged African leaders to invest in their own people, resources, and industries instead of waiting for help from foreign governments. He stressed that true development comes from within and that dependency on aid can weaken a nation’s ability to stand on its own.

Kenyatta’s statement was a challenge to African leaders to rethink their approach to governance and development. He urged them to take bold steps toward economic independence by using their natural resources wisely, strengthening local businesses, and improving governance. He also reminded them that strong leadership involves making tough decisions and finding sustainable solutions instead of relying on external support.
