After a six-year hiatus marked by political tension, the National Basketball Association (NBA) has officially returned to China, signaling a thaw in relations following the fallout over pro-democracy remarks in 2019. The league’s pre-season games, hosted in several major Chinese cities, mark a significant moment for both the NBA and its vast fan base in the world’s most populous nation.
The break began when a single tweet by a former Houston Rockets executive in support of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests triggered widespread backlash from Chinese authorities and sponsors. Broadcasts of NBA games were suspended, merchandise sales plummeted, and the league’s once-flourishing relationship with China one of its largest international markets was abruptly severed.
Now, with games once again airing on Chinese networks and players receiving warm receptions from local fans, the return highlights a slow but steady rebuilding of trust. Analysts suggest that both sides stand to gain: China’s basketball-loving audience regains access to one of the world’s top sports leagues, while the NBA reclaims a key commercial market that had accounted for hundreds of millions in annual revenue.
Despite the renewed partnership, the league remains cautious. While officials emphasize the NBA’s commitment to “mutual respect and cultural exchange,” discussions of politics remain off the court. For fans, however, the focus is clear after years of silence, basketball is finally back in China.
