STOOPID BOY’S BURIAL WISH SPARKS FAMILY STANDOFF

The family of late Arbantone rapper Edgar Davids Odhiambo Ochieng, popularly known as Stoopid Boy, is facing a difficult disagreement over where the artiste should be laid to rest, days after his death sent shockwaves through Kenya’s music scene.

The dispute centres on a reported wish by the Gbag Na Jug hitmaker to be buried at his father’s ancestral home in Siaya, a position supported by some of his close friends and members of his paternal family.

However, a section of his maternal relatives is reportedly pushing for his burial to take place in Nyandarua, where his mother is based and where his elder brother, Ian Wright, was buried earlier in May 2026.

The disagreement has left funeral preparations unsettled, with relatives from both sides continuing discussions on the way forward.

According to Moses, a friend of the family who spoke about the matter on Saturday, August 29, Stoopid Boy had made his preference known before his death.

Moses said the rapper told close friends that he wanted to be buried at his father’s compound in Siaya when his time came.

“They say the mother is in Nyandarua. Edgar, the deceased, the late, said once he dies, he should be buried in his father’s place, Siaya,” Moses said.

He further explained that he encountered Edgar’s maternal uncle, his mother’s brother, at a police station on Friday as the family began the formal process of preparing for the funeral.

“Yesterday, I talked to the uncle, the brother to the mother…yesterday at the police station, we were with him, the uncle to the deceased,” Moses said.

According to him, the uncle was at the station to obtain a police abstract before proceeding to the mortuary and undertaking further arrangements.

Moses expressed concern that preparations could result in the deceased being buried in Nyandarua rather than the location he had reportedly chosen.

“Yes. I can be corrected here. Edgar said when he I die, I want to be buried in my father’s compound,” he said.

He subsequently appealed to the family to honour the late musician’s reported wishes.

“Let us let that boy be buried in Siaya,” Moses said.

The disagreement has effectively placed the two sides of the family on different positions.

Those backing Siaya argue that Edgar had clearly communicated his preference and that his father's home held particular significance to him. His father, George William Ochieng Awili, and some of the rapper’s associates are said to favour having him return to his ancestral home.

On the other hand, the maternal side is understood to prefer Nyandarua, where his mother lives and where his late elder brother was recently buried.

The situation has therefore gone beyond a simple question of geography, with the family now having to balance the deceased’s reported wishes, the interests of his immediate relatives and cultural considerations surrounding burial.

With the disagreement unresolved, Stoopid Boy’s remains are reportedly still being preserved at Chiromo Mortuary as consultations continue.

Funeral committee meetings are being held daily at the rapper’s residence in Ongata Rongai, opposite Nairobi Women’s Hospital, as relatives and friends work on the arrangements.

A tentative date of September 6, 2026, has reportedly been discussed in some committee circles, alongside plans for a mural tribute in Kayole. However, no unified official burial date has been confirmed as the family continues to deliberate over the final resting place.

The committee has also indicated that approximately KSh200,000 is required to clear medical and mortuary expenses, with the overall funeral budget estimated at about KSh350,000.

Stoopid Boy’s death was confirmed on Thursday, August 27, by fellow artiste and close friend Jay Classic, triggering an outpouring of grief from fans and members of the local music industry. The rapper was reportedly believed to have died by suicide, although further details surrounding his death have not been publicly disclosed.

The rapper had built a following through his Arbantone sound and was particularly known for Gbag Na Jug, which became one of the songs associated with his growing profile.

His death has also brought renewed attention to the loss of his elder brother earlier in the year. A video showing the two siblings together before the brother’s death has resurfaced online, prompting fans to reflect on the difficult period the artiste had reportedly endured.

As family members continue consultations, the central question remains where Stoopid Boy will finally be laid to rest — his father’s ancestral home in Siaya, as his friends say he wished, or Nyandarua, where his mother lives and his elder brother was buried.

For now, the two sides remain engaged in discussions as they seek an agreement that will bring an end to the standoff and pave the way for the rapper’s final send-off.
