THE ICC PLAN , RUTO'S THREAT

Recent reports have alleged undercover operations by activists, human rights bodies and political opponents , from both local and international backgrounds , to present President William Ruto before the International Criminal Court (ICC), under grounds of alleged involvement in the 2007/08 post- elections violence , the 2024 anti finance bill deaths and corruption cases.

These reports particularly narrow down towards compiling a documentation on the human rights violations and deadly police brutality under Ruto's watch. This aims towards meeting the ICC intervention threshold as per the 2007/08 post -election incident.

The issue has led to a surge of reactions as supporters propose for Ruto to answer on the reasons for the state- oriented brutality , while opposers allege that the move would significantly destabilise the nation.

Ruto once appeared before the ICC back in 2011 alongside his 2012 Presidential partner, ex- president Uhuru Kenyatta, over inciting the 2007-2008 violence. However, the case was dismissed in 2016 due to insufficient evidence.

But, according to legal analysts, presenting, especially, a sitting President before the ICC, would require concrete and irrefutable evidences, this makes the situation more complex.

Speculations have it that igniting an ICC case against the president would seemingly undermine the nation's sovereignty .
Though, questions still exist on the potency of ICC's justice system to bring accused incumbents to book.
