Three Arrested for Assaulting Woman at Graveyard Over Burial Rituals

Police have arrested three men for assaulting a woman at a graveyard in Nyabisimba during a burial ceremony, following a heated family dispute over traditional burial customs.

The suspects, identified as Robert Pokea Sarudi, 43, Bismark Ondiek Sarudi, 40, and Lameck Ogindo Osoro, 27, allegedly attacked the woman on March 21, 2025, after she refused to participate in rituals demanded by her in-laws. The woman, who had been separated from her late ex-husband for several years, had been invited to the funeral by her former mother-in-law to allow her children to pay their final respects.

However, upon arrival, tensions quickly escalated when some family members insisted she throw soil into the grave, a symbolic act in many Kenyan communities. When she declined, citing personal reasons, the suspects allegedly accused her of being responsible for her ex-husband’s death and proceeded to assault her, leaving her with multiple injuries.

Witnesses at the burial site called for help, and authorities launched an investigation. The three suspects were later tracked down and arrested in Mwongorisi sub-location. They were taken to Kiambere Police Station, where they are currently in custody as police finalize investigations before pressing formal charges.

Nyamira County police have confirmed that they are pursuing additional suspects believed to have been involved in the attack.

This incident has sparked conversations about the enforcement of laws against gender-based violence and the need to protect women from forced participation in traditional customs. Local leaders and human rights activists have condemned the attack, calling for justice and urging communities to respect individual rights in burial practices.

“This is a clear case of assault and coercion,” said a representative from a local women’s rights organization. “No one should be forced into rituals against their will, let alone subjected to violence for refusing.”

The woman, who is currently recovering, has vowed to seek justice as authorities prepare to take legal action against the suspects.

The case highlights the ongoing tensions between cultural traditions and personal freedoms, raising urgent questions about the role of the law in safeguarding individuals from harmful practices.
