Butere Girls High School have successfully defended their National Term One basketball title, defeating Kaya Tiwi 76-53 in a thrilling final held at the Shimo la Tewa grounds in Mombasa.
The emphatic win not only cemented their dominance in the sport but also earned them a coveted slot at the upcoming East African Games.
To reach the final, the Western giants saw off Nairobi Regional champions Olympic, while Kaya Tiwi edged out St Joseph.
Butere's sporting triumph comes at a time when the school is at the centre of a national controversy surrounding their drama production, Echoes of War. The play, directed by former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, explores themes of youth resistance against government oppression—an allegory many say reflects the current Gen Z discontent.
Initially cleared to perform at the sub-county, county, and regional levels, the play was barred from the national stage over claims of unauthorized script changes. However, a court ruling later overturned the decision, allowing the students to present it at the nationals.
The dual headlines in sports and arts have placed Butere Girls firmly in the national spotlight—one for their excellence on the court, and the other for the boldness of their creative expression.
