The Kenyan government has announced revisions to the duration of diploma programs offered in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. During an interview with Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, TVET Principal Secretary Esther Thaara Muoria announced that diploma TVET courses will take one and a half years to complete.
She also emphasized the governments ongoing efforts to transform the TVET sector. Additionally, she noted that there are currently 240 TVET institutions across the country, with only around 50 to 52 constituencies still lacking such facilities. Diploma courses in TVET institutions mainly target students with a KCSE mean grade of C- and above.
Technical and Vocational Education and Training mainly focuses on practical skills and knowledge for specific trades or vocations, preparing individuals for a specific career. It serves as a substitution to traditional academic routes and aims to address skills gap in the job market. In Kenya TVET Authority regulates and coordinates TVET. The programs in TVET prepare individuals for employment and enhance their capabilities in various technical fields.
The PS has also appealed to the country’s youth to enroll in Technical and Vocational Education and Training, promising them a pathway to sustainable livelihoods through skills development.
