Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has officially left the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and joined the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK), aligning himself with the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a media briefing at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi on Monday, Nyoro said he and his supporters had already distanced themselves from UDA before formally joining the new political outfit.
“For the avoidance of doubt, you all know we left government a long time ago and disassociated ourselves with UDA,” Nyoro said.
Nyoro said he had accepted an opportunity to join the People’s Party of Kenya, which he described as part of the opposition, as he seeks to chart a new political path ahead of the 2027 elections.
“My people and I have joined the People’s Party of Kenya. I am glad that they have given me an opportunity, and I have accepted. Together as the People’s Party of Kenya, we have joined the Opposition,” he said.
The Kiharu lawmaker said his decision followed extensive consultations with opposition figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former Cabinet Secretary Martha Karua, former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, former Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Nyoro said his political decisions would be guided by the interests of Kenyans and the need to provide better leadership.
He also criticised the performance of the Kenya Kwanza administration, describing its early years in office as a period of “trial and error” and saying the government had fallen short of expectations created during the 2022 campaign.
The former government ally's departure comes after months of uncertainty over his political direction. Nyoro had been a prominent supporter of President William Ruto and played a significant role in the Kenya Kwanza campaign before his relationship with the administration deteriorated.
His move to the opposition gives him a new political platform as parties and political leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Nyoro has also indicated that the People’s Party of Kenya will embark on a nationwide mobilisation drive, including recruiting, mentoring and preparing candidates for various elective positions.
The development is likely to add momentum to ongoing efforts by opposition leaders to build a broader political alliance ahead of the 2027 polls, with Nyoro now positioning himself within the emerging opposition camp.
