The Kenyan education sector has been thrown into a state of unexpected transition with the sudden reassignment of the Principal Secretary (PS) of Education to the Department of Immigration. This move, announced amidst ongoing reforms and crucial national examinations, has sparked widespread debate and raised questions about the government's strategic priorities.
The PS, Belio Kipsang, who served under Prof Jacob Kaimenyi, Dr Fred Matiangi, Amina Mohammed, Prof George Magoha,Ezekiel Mochogu and the current CS Julius Ogamba had been instrumental in steering the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and addressing the myriad challenges facing the education system, now finds himself tasked with managing the complexities of immigration, with the former immigration PS Julius Bitok moving to the education sector.
This abrupt shift has left many within the educationsector surprised, particularly as it comes at a critical juncture when the sector is grappling with teacher shortages, infrastructure deficits, and the delicate transition of students through the new curriculum. The timing of the reassignment, just as national examinations are underway, has further fueled concerns about potential disruptions and the impact on the smooth administration of crucial assessments.
The move signals a potential shift in government focus, perhaps indicating an increased emphasis on border control and immigration management, but it also leaves a void in the education sector, raising questions about the continuity of ongoing reforms and the stability of leadership within the Ministry of Education.
