At least one person has been confirmed dead and another seriously injured after suspected Samburu bandits launched a violent attack on Borana herders at Madho Simpire, Chariward, in Merti Sub-county, Isiolo County. The information, first circulated through local Facebook groups, has since sparked widespread concern among residents.
During the raid, the attackers reportedly stole four motorbikes belonging to the herders before fleeing the scene. The incident has heightened fears of growing insecurity in the region, which has been grappling with sporadic violence linked to land and resource disputes.
This latest attack in Isiolo coincided with deadly protests in Narok County, where police reportedly shot and killed five demonstrators. The clash occurred in the Angata Barikoi area of Kilgoris during protests over a controversial 6,300-acre piece of land said to be under the control of a powerful local politician.
According to local reports, the Narok protestors were demanding the return of the disputed land when the confrontation with police turned violent.
Community leaders from both counties have called for immediate government intervention to restore peace, deploy additional security forces, and address the root causes of the recurring conflicts.
