National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has fired Nelson Havi as Chairperson of the Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA) Board and appointed Prof. Philip Kaloki in his place.
The announcement was made in a notice dated 29 July 2025, with the appointment taking effect on 30 July 2025. Prof. Kaloki will serve a three-year term.
The decision ends Nelson Havi’s tenure, which began on 10 February 2023 after his appointment by former Treasury CS Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u. Havi, a former President of the Law Society of Kenya, was expected to serve until February 2026. He had taken over from Abdirahin H. Abdi.
Prof. Kaloki, who previously chaired the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Board, has an extensive background in public service and politics. He was the Member of Parliament for Kibwezi from 2008 to 2013 and also served as the vice chair of the Departmental Committee on Finance, Planning and Trade. He was the running mate of Polycarp Igathe in the Nairobi gubernatorial race in 2022.
The new RBA Chairperson studied Finance and Economics at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor in Texas, later obtaining an MBA from Dallas Baptist University and a PhD in Business Administration from the University of Nairobi.
The National Treasury has not disclosed the reasons behind the firing of Havi, who continues to practise law as a senior partner at Havi & Company Advocates.
