DALMAS OTIENO’S DEATH REKINDLES PAINFUL MEMORY OF SON’S TRAGIC HELICOPTER CRASH

Former Cabinet Minister Dalmas Otieno, who passed away on Sunday September 7, 2025, at the age of 80, is being mourned across the country, with his death rekindling memories of a devastating family tragedy that struck 17 years ago.
Otieno’s son, Isaiah Otieno, died on May 13, 2008, in Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada, after a Bell 206 helicopter crashed and landed on him as he walked to a nearby post office to send letters home. The accident also claimed the lives of the pilot, Edward Heeb, and two BC Hydro employees, Dirk Rozenboom and Robert Lehmann.
At the time of the accident, Otieno was serving as Minister for Public Service in President Mwai Kibaki’s administration. The tragedy struck just an hour after he had spoken to his son on the phone. News of Isaiah’s death reached the minister through an email sent by his son’s friends before Canadian authorities confirmed the accident.
Dalmas Otieno, remembered for his long and decorated political career spanning several administrations, leaves behind a legacy of service but also the indelible mark of personal grief. His passing has reignited public reflection on the fragility of life and the resilience he displayed in the face of such a heartbreaking loss.
