Four police officers from the Operations Support Unit (OSU) of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have been arrested on allegations of running an illicit arms and ammunition racket that has been fueling insecurity and violence in different parts of the nation.
The suspects include Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Ekidor Lotira Charles, who is based in Turkana; Corporal Isaac Kipngetich, seconded to the headquarters of the Turkana County Police; Police Constable Ileli Cyrus Kisamwa, an armorer at the Central Firearms Stores in the Industrial Area; and Constable Samson Muriithi Mutongu, a storeman at the Industrial Area depot of firearms.
The four had previously been investigated for sometime in relation to an investigation into the importation of illegal guns and bullets, the DCI reported.
"The breakthrough came when Corporal Kipngetich was caught pants down after receiving a consignment of 1,000 rounds of ammunition from Constables Ileli and Mutongu, which was destined for ASP Ekidor Lotira," the DCI reported on Saturday.
Subsequently, detectives arrested Constable Mutongu and found 19 different firearm magazines, firing pins, cleaning kits, and spent 9mm caliber three cartridges.
Constable Ileli was also arrested in possession of a Remington Rand Model 1911 pistol and Ceska pistol firing pins two in number.
The four suspects are currently processed and will be arraigned on Monday, September 29, 2025.
The National Police Service (NPS), on its part, pledged to reiterate its determination to quash corrupt police officers who violate public trust, vowing to "pursue anyone who fuels violence through the illegal arms trade."
