Deputy IG Lagat Summoned as IPOA Intensifies Probe Into Blogger's Mysterious Death

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has summoned Deputy Inspector General of Police, Noor Gabow Lagat, as investigations deepen into the controversial death of blogger and political commentator, Tom Ojwang’. The move signals a significant escalation in the ongoing probe, which has drawn national attention and reignited calls for police accountability.

Ojwang’, known for his bold online activism and criticism of state agencies, was reported missing before his lifeless body was discovered under unclear circumstances. Preliminary reports suggested foul play, prompting human rights groups and the public to demand swift and transparent investigations.

According to sources close to the probe, IPOA is looking into claims of interference, delayed response from law enforcement, and possible obstruction of justice. The authority has already interviewed several officers believed to have had contact with the victim prior to his disappearance. The decision to summon Deputy IG Lagat, who oversees key operations within the National Police Service, underscores the seriousness of the inquiry and the possibility that senior officials could be implicated or have critical information.

IPOA officials have not disclosed the exact details of the summons but confirmed that the Deputy IG is expected to appear before the investigative panel in the coming days. His appearance could help shed light on police conduct during the period leading up to Ojwang’s death and clarify any alleged chain-of-command failures.

The National Police Service has yet to issue a detailed statement on the matter, although initial comments dismissed any involvement. However, with pressure mounting from civil society, lawmakers, and the public, the institution may be forced to respond more comprehensively in the days ahead.

As the investigation continues, IPOA has assured Kenyans of its commitment to an impartial and thorough process. The case is being watched closely as a litmus test for police oversight in the country, especially in high-profile cases involving freedom of expression and alleged abuse of power.
