DR. MWANGANGI APPOINTED AS NEW SHA CEO

Former Health CAS, Mercy Mwangangi has been appointed CEO of the Social Health Authority (SHA).

She was appointed by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, on Friday, 11, April, 2025.

“The Ministry of Health wishes to announce the appointment of Dr. Mercy Mwangangi as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Social Health Authority,” CS Duale said.

Mwangangi was among the 12 candidates who had been shortlisted for the job.

She is currently working as the Senior Health Systems Strengthening Director at AMREF Health Africa where she has been overseeing the financing and security of health investments across Africa, also funding primary healthcare systems.

“The Ministry congratulates Dr. Mwangangi on her appointment and wishes her all the best as she becomes the first Chief Executive Officer for the Social Health Authority. We are confident that she has what it takes to steer SHA and deliver on the mandate of SHA," Duale added.

Dr. Mwangangi, competence stands with over 15 years of experience in universal health coverage (UHC), institutional reform, and health systems strengthening.

She served under retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure as CAS health.
The appointed SHA CEO also worked with the then CS health , Mutahi Kagwe in championing the Covid-19 maintainance strategies.

President Ruto's administration saw the Social Health Authority replacing the defunct National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).
However, SHA has faced numerous criticism but the government has maintained on it's suitability as a health insurance cover.
