HOMA BAY COUNTY – A tragic incident marred Easter celebrations in Oyugis Town after two people were electrocuted to death and one other sustained serious injuries during a disco night at a local nightclub.
The accident occurred at around 2 a.m. on Good Friday inside the club’s open-air dancing area in Ragama estate. The deceased have been identified as Antipus Odongo, a minor, and an unidentified adult male. Both died on the spot after stepping on a live generator wire while dancing in the rain.
Oyugis West Sub-location Assistant Chief Warren Omollo confirmed the incident, saying the victims, including a woman who survived with injuries, unknowingly stepped on the exposed wire which was being used to power the music system. The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“The two young men died instantly. The lady who was with them was lucky to survive but sustained serious injuries,” said Omollo.
Rachuonyo South Sub-county Police Commander Philemon Saera said investigations have been launched, and the nightclub manager, the disco operator, and the individual who hired the DJ have been summoned for questioning.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Rachuonyo South Sub-county Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
Authorities are also probing possible negligence on the part of the event organizers.
