EDUCATION CS JULIUS MIGOS OGAMBA APPOINTS PROF. CHACHA NYAIGOTTI-CHACHA AS NEW UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI COUNCIL CHAIR IN NATIONWIDE SHAKE-UP.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has implemented a major reshuffle of university councils across Kenya, with the appointment of Professor Chacha Nyaigotti-Chacha as the new Chairperson of the University of Nairobi (UoN) Council. The appointment, announced in a gazette notice dated July 25, 2025, is made under Section 36(1)(a) of the Universities Act and will be effective for a three-year term. He will serve alongside newly appointed council members Dr John Kakonge, Samuel Njuguna Kimani, Dr Jonathan Ltipalei Lodompui, and Mary Amuyunzu.

This move comes just days after former UoN Council Chairperson Amukowa Anangwe and other senior officials were cleared of corruption charges. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) dropped a KSh 32.4 million graft case against them under Section 87(a) of the Criminal Procedure Code, paving the way for new leadership at the institution. At Kenyatta University, the CS appointed Joash Mokamba Keraita and Isaac Opuya Litali as new council members, while reappointing Maj. Gen. (Retd) Bashir Yusuf and Alice Waruguru Muita. Egerton University saw the appointment of Prof. James Sang as Chairperson, with Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed and Amos Okello joining as council members.

Kisii University also underwent changes, with the reappointment of Josephat Kipsoy Sawe and the addition of Dr Pamela Awuor Ochieng, Rev. Prof. Peter Mageto, and Dr Mwenda Makathimo. At the University of Eldoret, Dr Peter Onchari Kereri was reappointed, and Evelyne Timpiyan Legis and Razoah Vitisia were appointed as new council members. The University of Embu will now be chaired by Prof. P.M. Kutima, with Christine Guchu appointed as a council member. Kirinyaga University’s new council members include Silas Jakakimba, Ibrahim Khamis Mutwafy, Ursula Sabina Oyatsi, and Margaret Kathambi Gitonga. Murang’a University of Technology has also seen fresh appointments, with Allan Mugambi Michael, Amran Mohamed Ali, Getrude Chemutai Kurgat, and Abdul Ramadhan Odhiambo joining the council.

Nyandarua University College received five new council members: Job Wafula Chelongo, CPA Julius Obare Mokogi, Kariuki Peter Maru, Kirkwony Sophy, and Fatuma Abdi. Bomet University College also saw a leadership shift, with Prof. John Shiundu appointed as Chairperson and Dr Emily Kwamboka Nyagaram, Rose Chepkorir, and Fredrick Njoroge named as council members. Reuben Butaki was reappointed for another term.

Lastly, Rongo University welcomed Willy Kioko Malile to its council, as part of this broad government-led restructuring. All appointments and reappointments are effective for a three-year term starting from July 25, 2025.
