EPRA SHUTS DOWN NINE FUEL STATIONS IN NATIONWIDE CRACKDOWN

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has shut down nine fuel stations across Kenya in a sweeping crackdown on adulterated fuel and the illegal sale of export-bound petroleum. The operation, conducted between January and March 2025, targeted non-compliant fuel stations engaged in illicit practices.

According to EPRA, a total of 5,978 tests were carried out at 1,360 fuel sites across the country, revealing 13 stations that failed to meet regulatory standards. While three of the stations have since reopened after paying taxes and penalties, nine remain closed due to serious violations.

Among the stations shut down is Ahero Stage Filling Station in Kisumu, found selling super petrol mixed with domestic kerosene. Other affected outlets include Wamuini in Trans Nzoia and Mungatsi in Busia, both flagged for illegally selling export-designated fuel within Kenya.

Additionally, authorities uncovered an illegal fuel storage site in Mazeras, Kilifi County, which led to arrests. The discovery has raised concerns about the extent of illicit fuel operations in the country and the potential risks they pose to consumers and the economy.

EPRA has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing compliance and warned fuel dealers against engaging in illegal activities. The authority emphasized that such operations undermine market integrity and can lead to severe legal and financial consequences.

The crackdown underscores the government's ongoing efforts to eliminate fuel adulteration and illegal fuel trade, ensuring that consumers receive quality petroleum products while protecting the integrity of the energy sector.
