Shock and grief have gripped the Copperbelt after the gruesome murder of Fred Kapuku, a 34-year-old final-year medical student at the Copperbelt University. His dismembered body was discovered in Kitwe on Wednesday August 19 2025.
Police say Kapuku’s torso, with the head and legs missing, was found stuffed inside a black trunk abandoned along Jonken Road in Zamtan’s Chiminwa area. Residents reported hearing a vehicle around 04:30 hours and a loud thud, which they later believed was the trunk being dumped. Area councillor Luckson Filongwe alerted police after community members stumbled upon the chilling scene.
Copperbelt Police Commissioner Pethias Siandenge confirmed the body was found naked, with fresh cuts and burns on the chest, suggesting the killing took place elsewhere and the trunk was a secondary crime scene.
Shortly afterward, Hillcrest Police in Ndola reported the discovery of two human legs and a head near Hillcrest Clinic. Authorities suspect these body parts belong to Kapuku, linking the two crime scenes.
The victim was identified by his girlfriend, also a CBU medical student, who revealed she last communicated with him on Saturday, August 16, 2025. She said he had been driving a black Toyota Mark X, which has not been recovered. His mobile phone is also missing.
