FORMER CITIZEN TV JOURNALIST DIES

Kenya’s media industry is mourning the death of former Citizen TV journalist Kimani Mbugua, who passed away on Wednesday morning in Mombasa.

Reports indicate that the 29-year-old media personality died while undergoing treatment for mental health complications at a facility in the coastal city.

Kimani’s death comes after years of battling mental health challenges that often saw him admitted to hospitals and rehabilitation centers. Although the exact cause of death is yet to be officially confirmed, close sources say he had been receiving support in recent months as part of his recovery journey.

The late journalist had been open about his struggle with bipolar disorder, homelessness, and his efforts to rebuild his life. His courage to speak publicly about these issues helped raise awareness about mental health in Kenya and inspired many to seek help.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who had been among those supporting Kimani through his toughest times, expressed deep sorrow following the news of his passing.

“I am saddened to hear about the premature demise of former Citizen TV and NTV journalist Kimani Mbugua at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Mental Rescue Centre. It is believed that he may have taken his own life. I will issue a comprehensive statement once the police report is out,” Sonko said.

“In the meantime I extend my heartfelt condolences to Kimani's family, friends and relatives. I pray that God provides them with strength and comfort during this challenging time. May God rest his soul in eternal peace.”

Sonko had on several occasions stepped in to help Kimani access treatment and rehabilitation services, especially during periods when his condition worsened.

Kimani’s career began early in life. At just 19 years old, while still in university, he joined the Nation Media Group as a trainee in the radio department. His creativity and passion soon earned him a spot in entertainment reporting and production.

He later co-hosted shows such as The Trend alongside Larry Madowo, where his sharp mind and lively personality quickly made him a fan favorite.

After his stint at Nation Media Group, Kimani joined Royal Media Services, contributing to several platforms including Citizen TV, Inooro FM, and Hot 96. His work in entertainment journalism reflected both his versatility and deep love for storytelling.

In 2020, Kimani’s life took a difficult turn following a diagnosis of bipolar disorder - severely affecting his personal and professional life .

In 2024, he was admitted to the Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Rescue Centre after a relapse that became public following a series of concerning social media posts. Despite renewed efforts from family, friends, and well-wishers, his condition remained fragile.

Media personality Oga Obinna also played a crucial role in rallying Kenyans to offer both financial and emotional support to Mbugua during his long battle with mental illness.

Kimani Mbugua will be remembered as a talented journalist whose promising career in Kenya’s media landscape was tragically derailed by mental health struggles that ultimately led to his untimely death.
