GACHAGUA BOASTS AS 7-MONTH OLD DCP SWEEPS KEY BY-ELECTIONS

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has lauded his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) after its candidates clinched victories in three competitive by-elections, declaring the young outfit had “whitewashed” long-established political parties.

In a statement released on Friday, November 28, Gachagua hailed the party’s triumphs in the Narok Township, Kariobangi North and Kisa East ward races, noting that DCP’s rapid rise was reshaping Kenya’s political landscape.

“On behalf of the DCP and our members, I offer hearty congratulations to Hon. Douglas Masikonte, Hon. David Warui and Hon. Dickson Okwiri Aduda for winning the Narok Township, Kariobangi North and Kisa East wards, respectively.

“Our party, making the newest kid in the Block, which is seven months old, whitewashed old parties some old as twenty years,” said Gachagua.

Positioning the win as proof of DCP’s growing grassroots appeal, Gachagua thanked residents of the three wards for turning up to vote despite claims of intimidation and scattered incidents of violence.

“I salute them for rejecting voter bribery as an ingredient of our politics,” he said.

He encouraged aspirants seeking to join the party to remain connected to voters, emphasizing a people-centered political approach.

“I urge all those who wish to vie for seats under our party to remain on the ground and continuously engage the electorate as they listen to them,” Gachagua added.

The by-election results reflected a strong showing for the seven-month-old party.
In Narok Town Ward, DCP’s Douglas Masikonte won with 6,007 votes, humbling UDA’s Robert Kudate, who garnered 4,346 votes, while Jubilee’s Joshua Ole Kaputah trailed behind.

In Kariobangi North, a crowded field of 16 candidates battled for the seat, but DCP’s David Warui emerged ahead with 2,282 votes.

The momentum extended to Kisa East, where DCP’s Dickson Okwiri Aduda secured 1,952 votes, ahead of MDG’s Joel Ongoro (1,541 votes) and DAP-K’s Abraham Ayaya (944 votes). Other candidates represented KANU, ODM, UDP, Agano Party and JFP.

The Democracy for the Citizens Party was launched on May 15, 2025, at its headquarters along Musa Gitau Road in Lavington, Nairobi.

While celebrating its recent wins, DCP has also faced setbacks in several contests across the country:

Mbeere North (Embu County): DCP withdrew from the parliamentary by-election, choosing to back Democratic Party (DP) candidate. The party’s initial aspirant, Duncan Mbui, quit to run as an independent. The seat was eventually won by UDA’s Leonard Wa Muthende, marking an indirect loss for DCP.

Githurai Ward (Kiambu County): DCP’s Jane Mwikali finished fourth behind UDA’s Peter Kamau, Jubilee’s Samuel Njoroge, and an independent candidate.

Mirimaini Ward (Kieni, Nyeri County): DCP’s Michael Kirui was defeated by UDA’s John Mwangi and Jubilee’s Esther Wanjiru.

Nakuru East Ward: DCP’s Alice Njoki came behind ODM’s Charles Chege and UDA’s Daniel Koech.

Embakasi West (Nairobi County): DCP’s Samuel Otieno finished outside the top three, with UDA’s Joseph Mwangi winning.

These results highlight the young party’s uneven performance across regions, even as it gains traction in targeted areas.

Gachagua, however, maintains that the latest victories signal the beginning of a broader national presence for DCP as it continues to position itself as a rising force in Kenya’s multiparty arena.
