GACHAGUA CLAIMS ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTS, DEMANDS POLICE PROTECTION

Nairobi, April 15, 2025 — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has written to the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, alleging multiple assassination attempts and demanding immediate action to guarantee his safety.

In the letter, Gachagua accuses the police of failing to act on intelligence regarding threats to his life, and calls for the arrest and prosecution of individuals he claims are already known to law enforcement.

He further demands the immediate reinstatement of his security detail, which he says was withdrawn following his impeachment in 2024.

Gachagua detailed six incidents in which he and his supporters were allegedly attacked by what he termed “organised criminal gangs.” The most recent incident, he said, occurred on April 6 during a church service at PCEA Kasarani in Mwiki, Nairobi.

“A battalion of furious gangsters wielding machetes and crude weapons stormed the church where I was worshipping and caused chaos of unthinkable magnitude,” the former DP wrote.

He cited other incidents dating back to November 2024, most of them during church services or prayer rallies. Gachagua also alleged that he has been under constant surveillance by security agents, both in marked and unmarked vehicles, including an incident on December 19, 2024.

“You are well aware that security agencies have been trailing me,” he said, urging the Inspector General to end what he described as intimidation and unlawful monitoring.

Gachagua accused the police of colluding with the attackers and warned that Kanja would be held accountable for any further harm that may come to him.

“As you are aware, you have a constitutional duty and responsibility to protect the life and property of every Kenyan as enshrined in the Constitution. However, in this case, Mr Kanja, you are clearly perpetuating crime and violence,” the letter read.

This is not the first time the former Deputy President has claimed threats to his life. In October 2024, shortly after being discharged from hospital, Gachagua alleged that his food had been poisoned during a visit to Kisumu on August 30. He also referenced another alleged attempt on his life during a meeting with the Kikuyu Council of Elders in Nyeri.

The police are yet to respond to the latest allegations.
