GACHAGUA NAMED UNDISPUTED KING OF OPPOSITION

Gachagua's unprecedented shift from the State House corridors to the trenches of the opposition has caused a significant ripple in Kenya's political landscape. Since his impeachment, the former Deputy President has undergone a remarkable transformation—from what was once seen as a Cinderella story of an MP rising to become the country’s second-in-command, to an influential opposition figure. His unequivocal stunts and creative rhetoric have led some to dub him the “King of Opposition Politics.”

Speaking during an interview with a local TV station on the night of Monday, June 30, political analyst Herman Manyora argued that DCP leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has not only slammed Kenya’s longtime opposition enigma, Raila Odinga, but also bequeathed himself the title “King of Opposition Politics.”

Manyora stated that Gachagua has toppled Raila from his opposition throne and positioned himself as a thorn in President William Ruto’s flesh.

“Gachagua is the undisputed King of Opposition Politics. He has replaced Raila as the man to watch when you're talking about opposition politics. He is the most influential and powerful. He knows how to deliver pain to President Ruto—and delivers it well,” Manyora said.

“Whether he will proceed and run for presidency—that is another conversation. And whether he proceeds and wins—that’s a different conversation altogether. But in terms of his ability to scare and give the President sleepless nights, he is doing that very well,” he added.

The University of Nairobi lecturer also highlighted how Gachagua has creatively coined popular slogans—from “hi cousins” to the more recent “hi mashemeji”—beating his rivals at their own game.

“When they tried to isolate his people to turn the rest of the country against the mountain, he swung into ‘cousins,’ and today—or yesterday—I saw him swing into ‘mashemeji.’ He is beating them at their own game,” Manyora observed.

Since his impeachment, Gachagua has appeared like a man on a mission—restless and determined to ensure President Ruto becomes a one-term president. His “wantam” rhetoric has reduced Ruto’s responses to frustrated jabs. The President has frequently been heard lamenting, “‘Wantam’ is not an agenda.”

However, Gachagua seems to find satisfaction in seeing a visibly irritated President.
