GOVERNMENT EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR UNIVERSITY AND TVET SCHOLARSHIP AND LOAN APPLICATIONS

The Ministry of Education has extended the application deadline for scholarships and student loans targeting first-year university and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students. In a circular dated August 29, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba instructed the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and the Universities Fund to push the application deadline to Sunday, September 14, 2025. This move aims to ensure that no eligible student misses the opportunity to access government financial aid for higher education.

 “Good news! The scholarship application period has been extended. Don’t miss this chance; apply now and secure your future with government scholarships! “The extension grants students an extra two weeks to submit their applications.

According to CS Ogamba, as of now, the government has disbursed a total of Ksh 23.16 billion in financial support to 802,159 universities and TVET students across the country. The Universities Fund has allocated Ksh 4.1 billion in scholarships to public universities, while HELB has released Ksh 19.06 billion, including Ksh 7.6 billion for tuition and Ksh 11.46 billion for student upkeep. Upkeep funds are sent directly to students via their designated payment channels upon reporting to their institutions.

Ogamba encouraged students to log into their Higher Education Funding portals to verify the status of their applications and disbursements. He further assured that the government remains committed to making higher education accessible and affordable for all students, regardless of their financial circumstances. As of August 18, a total of 961,023 applications had been received from both first-time and continuing students in universities and TVET institutions. HELB has so far disbursed Ksh 9.46 billion to 309,178 university students—Ksh 5.76 billion for tuition and Ksh 3.7 billion for upkeep.
