IRUNGU NYAKERA SETS CONDITIONS BEFORE ICHUNG’WAH CAN JOIN GACHAGUA’S DCP

Democracy for Citizens’ Party (DCP) patron Irungu Nyakera has said strict vetting will be required before new members are admitted into the party.

Speaking on Wednesday, Nyakera explained that while the Rigathi Gachagua-led outfit is open to new entrants, the leadership will not allow infiltration by individuals who may seek to destabilise the movement.

“We need numbers, and anyone who believes in DCP is welcome to join us,” Nyakera said. “But we must also look at whether these people want to join us because they have been rejected elsewhere or whether they have genuinely changed.”

He said Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah is among leaders whose entry would be closely scrutinised. According to him, some defectors may be joining not out of conviction but to weaken the party from within.

“For the past three years, Kimani Ichung’wah’s words have been meant to fight the Mt Kenya region,” Nyakera said. “You cannot say that he has changed in one day.”

Nyakera also maintained that the opposition’s central objective is to block President William Ruto from winning a second term. “We are looking at one term ensuring that the president does not serve a second term,” he said.

He further cautioned that rival forces may attempt to infiltrate DCP through defectors. “Some will also be sent as spies to destroy the opposition,” Nyakera warned.

The remarks come as the 2027 General Election approaches, with Gachagua’s party increasingly viewed as a new political force in the Mt Kenya region.
