KENYA AIRWAYS TO SPEND KSH52 BILLION ON FLEET EXPANSION

Kenya Airways has announced plans to spend up to Ksh52 billion ($400 million) over the next five years to expand and modernise its aircraft fleet.

The announcement was made by the airline’s Group CEO, Alan Kilavuka, during the Annual General Meeting held in Nairobi. He said the national carrier aims to increase its fleet from the current 34 aircraft to 53 by the year 2029.

“Our initial assumptions estimate that the full fleet expansion and modernisation program will cost us between $300 and $400 million,” Kilavuka stated.

The ambitious plan includes acquiring new aircraft and upgrading existing ones. Key improvements will include modernising aircraft interiors and introducing in-flight Wi-Fi to enhance passenger experience.

Kilavuka emphasised that the expansion is necessary to improve operational efficiency and keep Kenya Airways competitive in the rapidly evolving global aviation industry.

However, the airline faces a significant hurdle. Kilavuka noted that global aircraft production delays are impacting acquisition timelines. “We had planned to acquire six Boeing 767s this year, but only one has been delivered so far,” he revealed.

The delays, he added, are not measured in months, but in years, with some new aircraft deliveries expected to take up to three years due to a global shortage in aircraft supply.

Board Chairman Michael Joseph echoed these concerns and stressed the need for government support. He urged the State to assist in finding a long awaited strategic investor to help secure Kenya Airways’ long term stability.
