Celebrities and content creators have joined forces in asking the government to lift the ban on their involvement in betting advertisements. This comes just days after the government, through the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), introduced new gambling advertisement guidelines following a month-long media ban. This rule was meant to prevent the glamorization of betting on social media.
During a press conference held at the Kenya national theatre on June 4, content creators released a statement read publicly by advocate Hansen Omido stating that the ban wasn't welcome. "We understand that there is need to protect the public especially the underage, a blanket ban cannot be the solution. It is a blow to the creative economy and to the thousands of young people whose livelihoods depend on digital content creation." Read part of the statement.
The content creators insisted that their interactions need to be responsibly managed not completely abolished, they further requested an urgent engagement with officials from BCLB, the Office of the Attorney General and other relevant stakeholders to deliberate on the issue.
