Kenyan Police Push for Sh20 Billion Digital Overhaul

The National Police Service (NPS) is seeking Sh20 billion to digitize its operations in a bid to enhance efficiency, transparency, and service delivery across the country. The ambitious plan aims to modernize key aspects of policing, including crime reporting, case management, and real-time data sharing among law enforcement agencies.

According to senior officials, the digitization project will significantly improve police response times, reduce paperwork, and enhance coordination between security agencies. “A fully digital system will enable us to serve Kenyans more effectively by streamlining investigations and enhancing accountability,” said Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome.

The proposed overhaul includes establishing an integrated command center, introducing biometric identification for suspects, and developing online platforms for public engagement. Digital records will also help track criminal cases more efficiently, reducing instances of lost files and delayed justice.

With crime evolving in the digital age, the NPS believes technology is key to combating cybercrime, fraud, and organized crime. However, concerns have been raised about the cost of implementation and data security risks. The police leadership is now calling on the government and stakeholders to support the funding request, emphasizing that a modernized police force will lead to improved security and public trust.

If approved, the initiative could transform law enforcement in Kenya, bringing it in line with global best practices and making policing more accessible and efficient for citizens.
