KIBUYE MARKET SHUT DOWN OVER CHOLERA FEARS

Kisumu County Government has ordered the immediate closure of the busy Kibuye Market following fears of a cholera outbreak.

The move comes after an assessment by the Department of Public Health flagged multiple health hazards that pose a serious risk to traders and shoppers. In a statement, City Manager Abala Wanga said the decision is anchored under the Public Health Act Cap 242 and is intended to prevent a potential public health crisis.

"Our inspection revealed alarming violations, including lack of clean and safe water, poor solid waste management, filthy toilet facilities, unsafe food handling, and blocked drainage systems," Wanga said.

He added that under Section 117 of the Public Health Act, all market operations at Kibuye are suspended with immediate effect until all outlined health requirements are fully addressed.

Among the corrective measures required are the restoration of a safe water supply, improved waste management, rehabilitation of sanitation facilities, regulation of eateries, and the removal of illegal structures obstructing drainage and access lanes.

To cushion traders and minimize disruption, the county government has temporarily relocated market activities to Uhuru Business Market, assuring vendors and the public that adequate arrangements have been made for a smooth transition.

"We remain committed to creating a clean, safe, and healthy environment for business," Wanga emphasized.

However, city authorities did not specify when Kibuye Market would reopen. "The closure is temporary and will only last until the necessary improvements are made. It may take less than a week," Wanga said.
