The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has cast doubt on Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale’s ability to effectively lead the healthcare sector, cautioning him against politicizing critical health matters. The union has urged Duale to prioritize the welfare of doctors and interns, emphasizing the urgent need for reforms.
Speaking during a press briefing, KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah expressed frustration with the ministry’s handling of key issues affecting healthcare workers. “The government must stop playing politics with the health sector. Our doctors and medical interns are suffering due to delayed payments, poor working conditions, and lack of structured employment,” he stated.
The union highlighted the plight of intern doctors who have gone months without salaries despite their crucial role in the healthcare system. “How do you expect interns to work tirelessly under such conditions? Many of them are struggling to afford basic needs,” Dr. Atellah added.
KMPDU has further accused CS Duale of neglecting negotiations and failing to implement agreements aimed at improving healthcare workers' welfare. “If the Ministry of Health continues to ignore our concerns, we will be left with no choice but to take industrial action,” Atellah warned.
In response, Duale dismissed the claims, insisting that his ministry is committed to addressing the grievances of medical workers. “We recognize the challenges in the sector, and we are actively working on solutions. Dialogue remains open, and I urge all stakeholders to engage constructively,” he said.
With tensions rising, healthcare professionals are demanding swift action to address their concerns. Analysts warn that continued friction between the government and medical workers could disrupt essential health services, impacting millions of Kenyans who rely on public hospitals.
As the standoff continues, the nation watches closely to see whether the Ministry of Health will implement tangible solutions or face escalating industrial unrest from the healthcare sector.
