Leaders and farmers join hands to revive Kenya’s coffee sector

Leaders, farmers and industry players gathered at Utalii Hotel during International Coffee Day, where New KPCU PLC pledged to spearhead the revival of Kenya’s coffee sector.

The event brought together cooperative leaders, farmers and government officials under the theme “Revival in Motion.” Participants said the reforms underway aim to improve farmer earnings, restore transparency and reposition Kenyan coffee on the global stage.

Speaking during the event, New KPCU Chairman Henry Kinyua said the revival of the crop is no longer a distant plan but an active mission.

“Revival of coffee production is not just a promise, it is a mission in motion. We are determined to restore the glory of Kenyan coffee and ensure farmers benefit fairly from their hard work,” he said.

Chief Executive Officer Anthony Ndung’u explained that the reforms are meant to rebuild trust with farmers and strengthen cooperative structures.

“This is about more than production numbers. It is about rebuilding pride, creating opportunity for farming families, and ensuring Kenyan coffee takes its rightful place in the world market,” he noted.

Farmers from different regions were praised for their resilience, with calls for more support in processing, marketing and value addition. Leaders also stressed the importance of involving youth and women as key players in the sector’s future growth.

International Coffee Day 2025 came as Kenya implements wide-ranging reforms to address years of low prices, mismanagement and climate pressures. Officials assured farmers that stronger systems and global marketing initiatives will secure better returns.

The day ended with a renewed commitment to uplift farming communities through coffee, with leaders expressing confidence that the revival will restore Kenya’s position in international trade.
