Manchester United have opted to retain head coach Michael Carrick despite an alarming run of results, giving him another opportunity to revive the struggling side ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea.

The decision, announced on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, follows intense discussions among club executives after United suffered a humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, extending their winless run in all competitions to eight matches.

Carrick had been widely expected to lose his job following the latest setback, but chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox have instead given him at least one more match to turn the situation around.

The former United midfielder took charge of training at the club’s Carrington facility on Tuesday as preparations continued for the trip to Stamford Bridge.

The decision comes at a difficult time for the 13-time Premier League champions, who have collected just seven points from their opening eight league matches. United sit 16th in the table, only one point above the relegation zone, marking their worst start to a league campaign in four decades.

Their domestic struggles have been compounded by a 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League, a result that exposed defensive weaknesses and intensified scrutiny of Carrick’s tactical decisions.

Carrick’s current predicament contrasts sharply with the circumstances surrounding his appointment earlier this year.

He took over as interim head coach in January 2026 following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal and quickly transformed the team’s fortunes, winning 12 of his 17 matches in charge.

His impressive run helped United finish third in the Premier League and secure a return to the Champions League, convincing the club’s leadership to hand him a permanent contract on May 22, running until 2028.

United subsequently invested in strengthening their midfield, raising expectations that the team would challenge among the league’s leading sides this season.

However, those ambitions have been undermined by a prolonged slump that has left the club struggling for consistency, confidence and results.

The latest defeat to Bournemouth also placed Carrick’s relationship with supporters and the dressing room under greater scrutiny, although fans at Old Trafford appeared to direct much of their anger towards the players and the club’s leadership.

Despite the hostile atmosphere, sections of the home crowd sang Carrick’s name and applauded him at full-time, offering the embattled coach a rare show of support amid the club’s turmoil.

Tensions between Carrick and his players have become another major concern, particularly following captain Bruno Fernandes’ public criticism of the team’s approach against Como.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the Champions League defeat, Fernandes questioned the decision not to press opponents more aggressively, arguing that allowing them space and time on the ball could make them more confident.

He maintained that the coaching staff needed to be more courageous in certain situations, even if a higher defensive line carried additional risks.

Although Fernandes stopped short of directly declaring Carrick’s tactics wrong, his remarks placed the coach’s decisions under further scrutiny.

Carrick responded by dropping the Portuguese midfielder to the bench for the Bournemouth encounter, handing the captain’s armband to Harry Maguire.

The move, however, failed to produce the desired response, with United suffering another damaging defeat that deepened concerns about the team’s direction.

Carrick must now decide whether to restore Fernandes to the starting line-up against Chelsea, with the relationship between the captain and the coaching staff emerging as one of the immediate challenges facing the head coach.

Defender Lisandro Martínez has also attracted attention following reported criticism of the club’s leadership and recruitment strategy.

Former United striker Wayne Rooney has meanwhile condemned the players’ conduct, accusing them of behaving selfishly rather than accepting responsibility for the team’s poor performances.

Despite the mounting pressure, Carrick has maintained that he remains committed to the club and believes the situation can still be reversed.

Following the heavy defeat to Como, he apologised to travelling supporters and admitted that the performance had fallen below acceptable standards.

He said there were no excuses for the display, acknowledging the disappointment of fans who had travelled to support the team.

After the Bournemouth loss, Carrick again expressed uncertainty about what would happen next but insisted that his priority remained doing what was best for Manchester United.

His comments fuelled speculation that he could be preparing to leave, although he subsequently denied that his interaction with supporters had been a farewell.

The decision to retain him has therefore provided temporary relief rather than a clear indication that the club has renewed its long-term confidence in his leadership.

Sky Sports analyst Rob Dorsett described the move as surprising, suggesting that keeping Carrick for another match might simply delay an inevitable managerial change.

United’s decision to retain Carrick also comes against a backdrop of uncertainty over potential replacements.

Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann have emerged among the names discussed as possible successors should the club eventually decide to make another change.

Howe, formerly of Newcastle United, has been linked with the role because of his reputation for building competitive teams. However, reports have pointed to contractual complications that could increase the cost of appointing him.

Nagelsmann, formerly Germany’s national team coach, has also been mentioned as an option because of his tactical approach, although there are reported differences within United’s leadership over the suitability of the available candidates.

Unai Emery has additionally attracted internal interest, but his contract with Aston Villa, which runs until 2029, could make a move financially difficult. Antonio Conte has also been linked with the vacancy.

According to reports, the club’s preference for a head-coach structure within its football operations has further complicated the search for a suitable successor.

Financial considerations are also likely to influence the decision. Dismissing Carrick only months after awarding him a long-term contract would carry compensation costs, while recruiting another coach and his backroom staff could add further expenditure.

United’s financial constraints have already complicated efforts to strengthen the squad, making another expensive managerial change a significant consideration for the leadership.

Carrick’s immediate attention now turns to Saturday’s meeting with Chelsea, where United will be under pressure to produce a response after their disappointing run.

The fixture presents an opportunity to restore some confidence, but another poor result would intensify questions about whether the former midfielder can stabilise the team.

United are also scheduled to face Roma in the Champions League on November 3 before taking on Aston Villa in the Premier League on November 8.

Those matches could provide further indications of whether the club’s decision to give Carrick more time will deliver the desired improvement.
