The highly awaited Mashemeji Derby is now scheduled to take place on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at the Nyayo National Stadium, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) says.
Earlier, FKF head of communications Jeff Kinyanjui confirmed the derby, set for this weekend, had been called off after Gor Mahia officially requested the postponement. The Nairobi giants failed in their bid to secure a suitable stadium for the clash slated for November 29th.
The bout was set to take place on November 30, 2025 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, but it was postponed again due to venue crisis.
In a letter to the Football Kenya Federation, the club cited unavailability of approved venues despite being the designated home team.
Kasarani Stadium, the traditional derby ground, is tied up with a continental engagement under the Confederation of African Football, while Nyayo Stadium is booked for a national event, meaning that Gor Mahia is left with no compliant venue capable of hosting a high-risk fixture of this magnitude.
The decision has left fans frustrated, with many lamenting the disruption of Kenya’s biggest football rivalry.
Club officials insist, however, that the move was inspired by responsibility rather than reluctance, underlining that holding the derby without meeting venue, safety, and crowd-control standards would entail unnecessary risks.
Previous tries to hold the derby in compromised conditions have been similarly problematic, making meticulous planning and infrastructure the key.
A new date is expected to be announced after consultations between FKF and the two clubs. Until then, the Mashemeji Derby is put on hold, an unusual occurrence that emphasizes how much Kenya needs international-class, high-capacity sports facilities.
