MASTERMINDING SAKAJA'S IMPEACHMENT

Nairobi’s political landscape has been thrown into fresh turmoil after reports emerged that at least 20 MCAs affiliated to President Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) allegedly held a secret meeting with their DCP rivals under the watch of former DP and DCP's leader Rigathi Gachagua.

Reports from insiders termed the meeting 's as based on a twofold agenda: to draft an impeachment motion against Governor Johnson Sakaja and to explore possibilities of shifting to the DCP side of their former second in command.

The meeting, said to have taken place last week, has fueled speculation of widening cracks within UDA’s Nairobi wing.

Seemingly frustrated MCAs described Sakaja’s leadership style as poor and compromised in service delivery .

, were mobilized by the DCP leader, who is keen on strengthening his foothold in Nairobi politics ahead of the 2027 elections.

Observers note that the impeachment push is not based on proven misconduct but is largely viewed as a politically motivated strategy to strengthen Gachagua's foothold in Nairobi ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a surprising twist, former Principal Secretary and DCP's patron for Nairobi Irungu Nyakera—who has been proposed to counter Sakaja in the 2027 City hall race—publicly defended Governor Sakaja.

“While I would naturally stand to benefit if Governor Sakaja were impeached, I do not support it. Nairobians freely chose him in 2022, and democracy demands that we respect that choice, even when it proves difficult,” Nyakera said on Monday.

He added that the governor should “drop the PR and theatrics” and focus his remaining two years on fulfilling the promises he made to Nairobi residents.

Meanwhile, the impeachment effort gained momentum over the weekend when ward representatives allied to the broad-based pact alongside their opposition counterparts announced a bipartisan push to oust the governor.

By Sunday evening, at least 70 signatures had been collected against Sakaja —just over half of the 123 required to officially table the motion, all these under grounds of; Failing to deliver on his 2022 campaign pledges , Stalling the Ward Development Fund projects, Delaying bursary allocations and Marginalizing ward-level priorities in county planning.

However, according to multiple reports, Sakaja held a closed-door meeting with ODM leader Raila Odinga—a move that allegedly prompted Raila to suppress dissent against the governor among ODM ward reps.

Raila’s support for Sakaja may have further widened the rift between him and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who had already declared his bid for Nairobi’s gubernatorial seat.

The rare unity between the ruling pact and opposition MCAs has been described as a major setback for Sakaja, who is barely halfway into his first term.

As pressure mounts, the embattled governor faces one of the most defining moments of his career. Whether he survives the motion or falls victim to Nairobi’s cutthroat politics may determine his political future beyond 2027.
