MOSES KURIA COMMENDS MT KENYA BUSINESS PEOPLE FOR PROTECTING THEIR BUSINESSES DURING PROTESTS

Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has commended the Mt Kenya business for standing firm in defense of their enterprises during Saba Saba protests held yesterday across various parts of the country. He praised them for their courage and resilience urging them not to allow anyone to destroy their businesses unless such individuals were also repaying loans with them. He further criticized the business owners in Embu and Meru, expressing disappointment in their failure to stand up during the unrest. He urged them to draw inspiration from their counterparts in the other counties and in Nairobi, whom he described as having set an example by staying focused on protecting their interests.

 The Saba Saba protests conducted across 17 counties including Nairobi, Eldoret, Nyeri, Embu, Meru, Nakuru, Kisii, Migori, Kisumu, Kitengela, Ngong, and Kangemi turned violent. Public spaces including schools, malls, and government buildings were shut down amid clashes involving tear gas, water cannons, live ammunition, and stone throwing. According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights(KNCHR), at least 10 people were killed, 29 injured, 2 abducted, and 37 arrested by the evening of July 7, 2025. Fatalities were recorded in Kitengela, Ongata Rongai, Kangemi, Embu, Ol Kalou, Ngong, and Kisii regions.

Widespread reports emerged of looting and arson, businesses, government facilities, and community hubs were set ablaze, notably including the Kerugoya Central CDF office, Magunas Supermarket and Club Seven Eleven in Meru, Nice Supermarket in Kirinyaga, and multiple police stations and vehicles.  In Kiambu County, youth raided the Magunas Supermarket in Kahawa Wendani, making off with goods of unknown value amid the chaos. In Naivasha, youth set the Kanjo (Viwandani) police base ablaze, with residents struggling to contain the flames.
