Former President Ruto's senior economic advisor Moses Kuria has thrown his hat into the ring for the Nairobi governorship, announcing his intention to run in the 2027 General Election.
Kuria made the declaration through his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday terming the bid as impused by the President and ODM leader Raila Odinga further pledging to restore the capital’s dignity and end what he termed as years of “filth, garbage, and incompetence.”
“Dear President William Ruto. Today you spoke to my heart. Like Prime Minister Baba Raila Amolo Odinga has told me countless times, Nairobi can not continue to be the City of filth, garbage and incompetence. I have heard your cry. That is why I will offer myself to be the Governor of the great County of Nairobi in 2027. I will fix Nairobi, " he wrote.
Kuria tendered his resignation on July 8, a move he described as an opportunity for self-examination. At some point, he appeared to take a swipe at his former boss’s administration, noting that his exit had granted him the freedom to speak his mind.
His declaration comes at a time when Nairobi’s leadership is under intense public scrutiny, with residents raising concerns over poor infrastructure, waste management, and strained public services. The capital, home to more than four million people, continues to grapple with flooding, uncollected garbage, and administrative inefficiency — challenges that have persisted across successive county governments but have notably worsened under Governor Johnson Sakaja’s tenure.
However, in light of the criticism, Governor Sakaja has expressed his determination to restore Nairobi’s cleanliness, accusing “political shenanigans” of being paid to dump garbage across the city in a deliberate attempt to tarnish his administration’s image.
Kuria’s entry into the city’s political arena is expected to shake up Nairobi’s political dynamics, which had largely positioned Embakasi East MP Babu Owino as the frontrunner, followed by the incumbent governor. Embakasi North MP James Gakuya and DCP’s Nairobi Patron Irungu Nyakera were seen occupying the third and fourth positions respectively.
