MOSIRIA TO LEAD AN INSPECTION OF WASTE DISPOSAL FROM HOTELS AND OTHER ESTABLISHMENTS WITHIN NAIROBI CITY

Nairobi City County has announced a fresh crackdown on all hotels and businesses within the Central Business District (CBD). Geoffrey Mosiria, Nairobi’s Chief Environmental Officer, has revealed that he will lead the inspection of waste disposal from all establishments within the city.
"I will be leading an operation in the CBD to inspect all hotels and other establishments that generate waste, focusing on how they manage and dispose of it" He stated.
Mosiria decried that there are sacks of garbage dumped along road reserves and walkways, contributing to the untidiness of Nairobi City.
He accused businesses of dumping such waste to avoid paying proper disposal fees.
Mosiria stated that some premises pay street families and unlicensed individuals to dump waste in unauthorized locations within the city.
"One of the biggest challenges we face is that many businesses generating waste do not want to incur the cost of proper disposal. Instead, they hire street families or unlicensed individuals who charge less but end up dumping waste illegally." He said.
He explained that illegal dumping makes the city dirty and undermines the efforts of the County Government to maintain a clean and organized environment. Mosiria has threatened to take legal action against businesses involved in illegal dumping in any way.
Further, Mosiria said any garbage found dumped within the CBD will be traced back to its source, and those responsible will be held accountable. He stated that the initiative will extend to the entire city as they work to eliminate illegal dumping and maintain a cleaner, healthier Nairobi.
