Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has officially declared Monday, March 31, 2025, a public holiday in celebration of Eid ul-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
The announcement allows Muslim faithful across the country to observe the special occasion with prayers, feasting, and family gatherings. Eid ul-Fitr is a significant religious festival in Islam, celebrated after a month of fasting and spiritual reflection.
Speaking during the announcement, CS Murkomen emphasized the importance of the holiday in fostering national unity and religious inclusivity.
"Eid ul-Fitr is a time of reflection, gratitude, and celebration for our Muslim brothers and sisters. Declaring this day a public holiday ensures they can observe it with their families and communities without disruption,"Murkomen stated.
The declaration aligns with the Public Holidays Act, which allows the government to recognize religious and cultural celebrations observed by different communities in Kenya.
Nationwide Celebrations and Preparations
Eid ul-Fitr will be marked with special prayers in mosques and open grounds across the country. Religious leaders have called for peace, unity, and acts of charity, urging all Kenyans to embrace the spirit of togetherness.
In major cities such as Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu , security measures will be heightened around mosques and prayer venues to ensure smooth celebrations. County governments are also expected to facilitate necessary arrangements, including traffic control and public safety measures.
Economic and Social Impact
With the public holiday in place, government offices, schools, and many businesses will remain closed. However, sectors such as tourism and hospitality are expected to benefit as Kenyans take advantage of the long weekend for travel and leisure.
Employers in essential services, including healthcare and security, have been advised to make necessary adjustments while ensuring that critical services remain available.
A Call for Unity
As the nation prepares for the celebrations, leaders have encouraged Kenyans of all faiths to support their Muslim counterparts and embrace the values of faith, generosity, and gratitude that define Eid ul-Fitr.
