Murkomen Responds to DIG Lagat’s Resignation Amid IPOA Probe

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding the resignation of Deputy Inspector General of Police, Noor Gabow Lagat, whose exit comes as investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) intensify.

Speaking during a press briefing on Sunday, Murkomen downplayed calls for immediate action or conclusions regarding the matter, stating, *“We will cross that bridge when we get there.”* His comment appears to signal the government’s wait-and-see approach as IPOA carries out its inquiry into alleged misconduct and abuse of office.

Lagat’s resignation has sparked public debate, with civil society groups and some lawmakers demanding greater transparency and accountability within the police service. While IPOA has not released detailed findings yet, sources suggest the probe is centered around the handling of recent high-profile cases involving alleged police brutality and misuse of authority.

CS Murkomen, while not directly involved in police affairs, was addressing broader concerns of public trust in government institutions when he made the remark. He emphasized the need to allow independent bodies like IPOA to carry out their mandates without interference or political pressure.

"Let IPOA do its work. At the right time, appropriate steps will be taken based on their findings," he said.

The Ministry of Interior and the Office of the Inspector General have yet to issue formal statements regarding Lagat’s resignation or the next steps in filling the vacancy. Meanwhile, IPOA maintains that the investigation is ongoing and urged the public to be patient as due process unfolds.

Lagat, who served in the National Police Service for decades, has not made any public comment since his resignation. His departure, however, comes at a time when the conduct of security agencies is under increasing scrutiny.

The unfolding events are expected to have significant implications for police reforms and the accountability mechanisms overseeing law enforcement in Kenya.
