OPPOSITION WRANGLES, LOOMING FALLOUT

Tensions within the opposition alliance are seemingly simmering. With each core opposition leader carrying an air of superiority, the battle for supremacy is imminent. The most recent preluding an impending Gachagua - Matiang'i political showdown.

The Kisii region— considered as Matiang'i's political turf —led by Governor Simba Arati have strongly objected to Gachagua’s plans to stage a political rally in Kisii, accusing him of disregarding the region’s political leadership.

Arati, a vocal ally of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, criticized what he called an unwelcome intrusion. He insisted that any national leader seeking to engage Kisii residents must first consult local leaders and respect the county's political direction.

At the center of the clash is Gachagua’s controversial “One Term” campaign slogan, which he has been pushing across various parts of the country. Arati dismissed the messaging as out of touch with the political aspirations of the people of Kisii and warned that such narratives would not gain ground in the region without alignment with local leadership priorities.

The friction appears to be closely tied to the political rise of Fred Matiang’i, whose name continues to gain traction in conversations about the 2027 presidential race. While Matiang’i has not officially launched his bid, Arati and other like-minded leaders are already mobilizing grassroots support in anticipation. The governor’s remarks were widely seen as a move to defend that emerging bloc from perceived political interference.

This is not the first time Arati and Gachagua have clashed. The governor recalled a previous episode in which his security detail was withdrawn during a tense political period — a move he attributes to Gachagua’s influence at the time. He referenced the incident as part of a long-running pattern of political hostility.

With succession politics already stirring heated debate, the latest exchange signals growing unease and power struggles within the opposition’s top ranks.
