A Nairobi resident's night of heavy celebration and socializing has landed him in custody, with the local court sentencing Qurine Omondi Muteshi to a two-month jail term with the option of a Ksh30,000 fine—after he was convicted of obtaining credit by false pretense for an unpaid hotel bill. The incident occurred on October 3, 2025, at Vibanda Village in Upper Hill, where Muteshi ordered a significant amount of food, alcoholic beverages, and water for himself and his friends, allowing the total bill to accumulate to Ksh22,760 before he allegedly left the establishment without payment. In his emotional mitigation before the court, Omondi detailed how his celebration spiraled out of control: "I had some money so I called my friends to celebrate... I became so high and was surrounded by many ladies, each asking for drinks. Eventually, people disappeared, and I was left alone with the bill," he stated, adding that he later noticed suspicious loan transactions on his phone and was genuinely shocked by the final debt. Pleading for leniency, the city resident lamented his plight, asking the court to forgive him even with punishment, arguing that "Some of us suffer because we are still new in Nairobi... I am not yet conversant with all its corners." Despite his appeal, the magistrate upheld the law, sentencing Omondi to two months in prison, giving him the option to settle the Ksh30,000
