POPULAR MATATU INSURER INVESCO PLACED UNDER LIQUIDATION AGAIN

Invesco Assurance Company Limited, a leading insurer in Kenya’s matatu sector, has once again been placed under liquidation following years of financial trouble.
On July 31, 2025, the High Court issued a provisional liquidation order against the company. A public notice dated August 26 confirmed the appointment of Diana Nduku Mumo as the Provisional Liquidator, with creditors now required to file their claims and the company directors ordered to submit a Statement of Affairs within 21 days.
This marks the second liquidation order against Invesco in just over two years. The insurer was first placed under liquidation in February 2023 after failing to meet claims obligations and submit audited accounts. In August 2024, it was placed under statutory management by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), with the Policyholders Compensation Fund (PCF) taking over its operations and suspending payments.
Industry data showed Invesco had the worst claims settlement ratio in late 2022, paying out just 48,207 claims out of 3.69 million lodged—about 1.2 percent.
The collapse leaves thousands of matatu operators and passengers uncertain about compensation, with the PCF expected to handle claims from affected policyholders.
