Nairobi, June 9, 2025 — Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor has withdrawn from conducting the autopsy of Albert Ojwang’, following public pressure and demands for an impartial investigation into the death of the 28-year-old, who died while in police custody.
Ojwang’s death has triggered widespread outrage, with the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and multiple human rights organizations condemning the conduct of the police. They are calling for a thorough, independent investigation, citing concerns over possible torture or foul play.
In response to growing public distrust, Ojwang’s family has confirmed that they will hire a private pathologist to carry out the post-mortem.
“We are committed to seeking the truth,” a family spokesperson said. “We need an independent process to ensure justice is served.”
Dr. Oduor has not officially stated his reasons for stepping down, but insiders suggest pressure from the public and advocacy groups played a role.
The autopsy, now expected to proceed under private supervision, could be a turning point in a case that has come to symbolize concerns about police accountability in Kenya.
