Raila Returns After AUC Defeat

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga returned quietly on a flight from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Monday 17, morning after undertaking an intensive week-long diplomatic tour in an attempt to help restore some shine on Kenya's African continental crown. After months of representing the country at international summits and conferences, Odinga made his own low-profile return free of pomp and circumstance.

It was part of continued efforts to secure a more powerful foothold for Kenya in regional and continental affairs, especially regarding economic integration and security. Odinga's visit to Ethiopia underscored the fact that he still has a significant role to play in African diplomacy, where he continues to wield a great deal of credibility and to be seen as a statesman.

Odinga's return comes at a time when political temperatures are rising in Kenya with issues of governance, national reforms as well as the 2027 elections already on the agenda. Widely perceived as one of the most significant personalities in the political landscape of the country, the former Prime Minister held major influence over important debates at the national level. His low-key arrival serves notice that even though he is not in the daily political fray, he will have a voice and a presence as the nation gets ready for what comes next.

With the political climate becoming more charged, Odinga’s next move is now under scrutiny. As an elder statesman, he is still an important actor in determining Kenya’s trajectory, both at home and in the wider African context.
